Billy Strings Plays an Acoustic Hour at Austin City Limits, and It Still Sounds Like an Arena Show
Tonight on Live Jam • Friday, October 16, 2026 • ACL Live at The Moody Theater, Austin, TX
Billy Strings sells out arenas for multiple nights in a row with a band that picks acoustic instruments, which is not supposed to be possible. Austin City Limits executive producer Terry Lickona has said he has been a bluegrass fan his whole life and has never seen a bluegrass singer and picker excite a crowd the way Billy does. Tonight, Friday Night Lights puts the proof on the air, with the three-time Grammy Award winner’s full return to the ACL stage.
The context makes this one special. Billy taped the hour on July 2 at ACL Live at The Moody Theater, his first full-band show of his own since breaking his leg in April. He came back with his four-piece acoustic band in classic picking session formation, Jarrod Walker on mandolin, Royal Masat on upright bass, Billy Failing on banjo, and Alex Hargreaves on fiddle, and nothing about the performance sounds like a musician easing back in. It is a no-frills hour, which is exactly how he likes it, because as Lickona put it, the whole thing is about the music.
The set pulls heavily from Highway Prayers, the album that earned him a Grammy and stretched bluegrass in directions the genre rarely goes, with selections from Renewal and his newest record, So Much for Goodbyes, woven in. The classics are here too. Frank Wakefield’s “End of the Rainbow” flows straight into Dave Grisman’s “Dawg’s Rag,” and an extended “Hide and Seek” jam tips its hat to Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” a reminder that this band can play a barn dance and a psychedelic ballroom in the same breath.
Billy closes the hour the way he always seems to, with a quick, friendly signoff, “My name’s Bill. It’s been a thrill.” It is a fitting line for a musician who has turned a centuries-old tradition into one of the biggest live draws in American music, and a good reason to stay tuned for the whole fifty three minutes.
