Watch Nirvana Cover Led Zeppelin in 1988 Before Dave Grohl Joined

Before Nirvana recruited Dave Grohl on drums, the soon-to-be-legendary grunge act from Aberdeen, Washington, was propelled by drummer Chad Channing. And around that time, circa 1988, the band would stage intimate (if not drunken) rehearsal sessions above a local salon owned by Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic‘s mom, Maria’s Hair Design.

That’s what viewers can see in footage of one such rehearsal, as Louder reported this week (Nov. 15). The video has been available for quite a while — still, it offers an arresting look at a grunge juggernaut in the making. And that includes Nirvana covering Led Zeppelin.

Watch the footage near the bottom of this post.

Indeed, in the video, Nirvana do a loose take on Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.” It shines amid a setlist populated by songs that would find their way onto Nirvana’s 1989 debut album, Bleach — tunes such as “About a Girl,” “Scoff” and “Big Long Now.”

The rehearsal footage was captured by Novoselic’s younger brother, Robert. “We got some beer, watched my brother and partied,” Robert recalled in 2005. “We really didn’t think anything of it at the time because [Nirvana] were not that popular then.”

But they would become extremely popular just a few short years later when they made a lasting indent in the mainstream with 1991’s zeitgeist-defining Nevermind. Now, any vintage Nirvana footage acts as a time capsule of importance to students of rock music.

Cobain died by suicide in 1994; Grohl went on to form Foo Fighters after his death. Novoselic currently plays in the supergroup 3rd Secret. See the Led Zeppelin cover at 10:50 in the first video below.

Taylor Swift Tickets 2023: The Eras Tour Resale Discount Codes, Deals

Good news, Swifties. Taylor Swift tickets to The Eras Tour aren’t sold out yet, and there’s a way to attend the tour for a massive discount.

The Eras Tour is Swift’s sixth headlining concert tour following the Fearless Tour in 2009 and 2010; the Speak Now World Tour in 2011 and 2012; The Red Tour in 2013 and 2014; The 1989 World Tour in 2015; and the Reputation Stadium Tour in 2018. Swift was set to perform on her sixth concert tour, Lover Fest, in 2020, however the tour was postponed and eventually cancelled in February 2021 due to the current health crisis. “I love coming on here to tell you good news, or to share a new project with you,” she wrote on her social media accounts. “It’s not my favorite thing in the world to have to tell you news I’m sad about. I’m so sorry, but I cannot reschedule the shows that we’ve postponed. Although refunds have been available since we first postponed the Lover Fest shows, many of you hung onto your tickets and I too hung onto the idea that we could reschedule,” she wrote on her social media at the time. “This is an unprecedented pandemic that has changed everyone’s plans and no one knows what the touring landscape is going to look like in the near future. I’m so disappointed that I won’t be able to see you in person as soon as I wanted to. I miss you terribly and can’t wait til we can all safely be at shows together again.”

Swift announced The Eras Tour in November 2022. The tour—which was announced less than two weeks after the release of her most recent album, Midnights—is a “journey through the musical eras” of Swift’s past 10 albums: 2006’s Taylor Swift; 2008’s Fearless; 2010’s Speak Now; 2012’s Red; 2014’s 1989; 2017’s Reputation; 2019’s Lover; 2020’s Folklore and Evermore; and 2022’s Midnights. Due to the current health crisis, Swift’s most recent four albums—Lover, Folklore, Evermore and Midnights—will be performed on tour for the first time on The Eras Tour.

Taylor Swift’s The Eras opening acts include Paramore, Phoebe Bridgers, Haim, GAYLE, Gracie Abrams and more artists. Two of Swift’s The Eras Tour opening acts have been featured on her songs: Haim, who was featured on the “No Body, No Crime” from Swift’s 2020 album Evermore; and Phoebe Bridgers, who was featured on “Nothing New” from her 2021 album Red (Taylor’s Version). “I got this random text from Aaron Dessner that was really weirdly worded for him,” she said. “And I was like, ‘What the fuck is this?’ And as I was reading it, I [realised], ‘Oh, my God, it’s from Taylor Swift,’” Bridgers told Billboard in 2022. “We started texting about all kinds of stuff. It was just a total high. It felt like when you meet someone at a party and you’re in the corner all night being like, ‘Me too!’”.

What is Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour set list?

Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour set list won’t be confirmed until her tour starts in March 2023. However, Swift explained in an Instagram post announcing The Eras Tour in November 2022 that the tour will be a “journey through the musical eras” of her past 10 albums: 2006’s Taylor Swift; 2008’s Fearless; 2010’s Speak Now; 2012’s Red; 2014’s 1989; 2017’s Reputation; 2019’s Lover; 2020’s Folklore and Evermore; and 2022’s Midnights. “I’m enchanted to announce my next tour: Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour, a journey through the musical eras of my career (past and present!) The first leg of the tour will be in stadiums across the US, with international dates to be announced as soon as we can! Feeling like the luckiest person alive because I get to take these brilliant artists out on tour with me: @paramore, @radvxz, @phoebebridgers, @girlinred, @whereismuna, @haimtheband, @gracieabrams, @gayle and @owennmusic. I can’t WAIT to see your gorgeous faces out there. It’s been a long time coming 🥰

In a TikTok comment in November 2022, Swift confirmed that “Delicate,” her third single from Reputation, will be on the set list for The Eras Tour. The confirmation came after a TikTok user named Alex posted a video of her singing along to 2018 clip of Swift performing “Delicate” on her Reputation Tour. “Petition to bring this back for eras tour,” the user wrote on the video. Swift responded in the comments with “Done.”

Given that Swift hasn’t had a tour to promote her most recent four albums—Lover, Folklore, Evermore and Midnights—fans expect The Eras Tour to lean more on these records, especially Midnights, which was released less than two weeks before Swift announced The Eras Tour. In an Instagram post in October 2022, Swift explained that Midnights consisted of 13 songs written in the “middle of the night.” “We lie awake in love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears. We stare at walls and drink until they speak back. We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t—right this minute—about to make some fateful life-altering mistake,” she wrote. “This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching—hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve…we’ll meet ourselves.” She continued in a tweet at the time, “Midnights is a collage of intensity, highs and lows and ebbs and flows. Life can be dark, starry, cloudy, terrifying, electrifying, hot, cold, romantic or lonely. Just like Midnights.”

At 3 a.m. ET on October 21, 2022, three hours after the release of Midnights, Swift announced that she released seven more songs as part of a deluxe version of the album  titled Midnights (3am Edition). “Surprise! I think of Midnights as a complete concept album, with those 13 songs forming a full picture of the intensities of that mystifying, mad hour. However! There were other songs we wrote on our journey to find that magic 13,” she tweeted at the time. She accompanied the tweet with a post that explained that the time 3 a.m. means to her. “What keeps you up at night? It’s a momentary glimmer of distraction,” she wrote. “The tiniest notion of reminiscent thought that wanders off into wondering, the spark that lights a tinderbox of fixation. And now it is irreversible. The flame has caught. You’re wide awake.”

See the track list to Midnights by Taylor Swift below.

  1. “Lavender Haze”
  2. “Maroon”
  3. “Anti-Hero”
  4. “Snow on the Beach” featuring Lana Del Rey
  5. “You’re on Your Own, Kid”
  6. “Midnight Rain”
  7. “Question…?”

  13. “Mastermind”
  14. “The Great War”
  15. “Bigger Than the Whole Sky”

The Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert on WRTI: French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet plays Franz Lizst

Join us on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. on WRTI 90.1, and Monday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. on WRTI HD-2 when our Philadelphia Orchestra in Concert series brings you a stunning performance recorded live in April, 2022.

French conductor Stéphane Denève, music director of the Saint Louis Symphony, is on the podium as French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet returns to The Philadelphia Orchestra to play Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major.

The concert also features the Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) by Richard Strauss.

Richard Strauss was only in his 30s when he began work on his massive autobiographical tone poem Ein Heldenleben. But he had already produced many of his best-known orchestral works, making a strong impression on audiences, critics, and his colleagues.

Not all the attention was complimentary—by this time Strauss inhabited the most modern end of the musical spectrum, and had endured his fair share of critical brickbats. In A Hero’s Life he eloquently turned the tables on his musical opponents. As he commented to a friend about the work, “All you need to know is that it portrays a hero in combat with his enemies.” (Strauss made it clear that he was the artistic hero in question!)

This week’s concert opens with music by another kind of superhero of the 19th century: Franz Liszt, who was lionized for his brilliant virtuosity at the keyboard.

Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet is featured in Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major, definitely a vehicle for virtuoso fireworks. However, Liszt wrote it once he had given up his life as a touring virtuoso, and didn’t even play the piano at the premiere. After years thrilling audiences with his musical wizardry, he accepted a conducting position in the German city of Weimar, and focused for the first time on writing and conducting orchestral works such as this one, which he called a “symphonic concerto.” It features an innovative single-movement structure with two primary themes, transformed throughout the work in various guises.

Conductor Stéphane Denève talks with WRTI’s Susan Lewis about the music of Liszt and R. Strauss.

Listen during the broadcast for producer Susan Lewis’ interviews with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Stéphane Denève.

Detailed program notes from the concert.

PROGRAM:

Taylor Swift’s Tour Presale Breaks Ticketmaster

“It’s me. Hi. I’m the problem it’s me.”

Image: Terry Wyatt (Getty Images)

The presale for Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” has officially broken Ticketmaster. The singer’s sixth concert tour—her first since 2018—has seen increased demand coming off the record-breaking release of her album Midnights.

Just a few weeks ago, singer-songwriter Taylor Swift officially announced her upcoming concert tour in support of her overall portfolio of music as well as her newly released album Midnights. With an anticipated high demand for tickets, savvy Swifties were able to enroll in a presale lottery prior to tickets becoming available to the general public. Lucky fans would receive a special code that would allow them to access tickets before they went on sale to the rest of the world. Presale officially began this morning at 10 a.m. ET, and just a few short moments later, Ticketmaster was down for the count.

The website DownDetector received a spike in reports prior to the 10 a.m. presale, with another spike beginning about 20 minutes after tickets became available.

“If you received a code to the TaylorSwiftTix Presale, please login and access the queue through the link you received via text rather than entering through the Ticketmaster homepage,” the company advised on Twitter prior to the sale. “This will ensure an optimal shopping experience.”

At the original time of writing this article, I am unable to access the Ticketmaster homepage, being greeted instead with a 503 error. Look what you made her do.

Swift’s last tour—2018’s Reputation Stadium Tour—saw 53 sold-out shows across the world, and The Eras Tour has 52 shows scheduled in the U.S. alone. Swifties across TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram have been sharing tips and best practices on securing tickets leading up to today’s presale. If the Midnights’ release was any indication, this will likely be Swift’s biggest tour to date, which Swift described as a “journey through all of my musical eras of my career.”

Demand for tickets was so high and outages were so prevalent during the first few hours of presale that Ticketmaster has officially rescheduled Eras Tour pre-sales according to a statement posted to their Twitter that cited “historically unprecedented demand.” Any users in a queue for tickets were instructed to remain waiting until prompted to purchase tickets.

Pre-sale for West Coast stadiums in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Santa Clara, and Seattle was originally scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. PT, but has now been rescheduled to 3 p.m. PT with queues opening 30 minutes prior. Meanwhile, Capital One credit card holders that were set to receive access to pre-sale at 2 p.m. local time will now have to wait until 2 p.m. local time tomorrow for a chance to score tickets. Rest assured, Ticketmaster wants to be very clear about the fact that “hundreds of thousands of tickets” have already been sold.

Swift has a lot of ground to cover on The Eras Tour. Since her last tour, the singer has released four original studio albums—Lover, folklore, evermore, and Midnights— and two re-recorded albums—Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version). Midnights, her most recent endeavor, has sold over 1 million copies, while ten of the album’s tracks occupied all top ten spots on the Billboard Hot 100, making Swift the first artist to do so.

Study shows 1 billion young people are at risk for hearing loss. This is how to prevent it

By Madeline Holcombe, CNN

Turning down the racket isn’t just for disgruntled parents — a new study has shown it could protect more than 1 billion people at risk for hearing loss.

When it comes to phones, music, movies and shows, it’s common for adolescents and young adults to listen too loud and too long, according to the study published Tuesday in the journal BMJ Global Health.

“We estimated that 0.67 to 1.35 billion individuals aged 12-34 years worldwide likely engage in unsafe listening practices,” and are therefore at risk for hearing loss, said lead study author Lauren Dillard via email. Dillard is a consultant to the World Health Organization and a postdoctoral fellow at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Exposure to sound at too high a volume can fatigue the sensory cells and structures in the ear, Dillard said. If that goes on for too long, they can become permanently damaged, resulting in hearing loss, tinnitus or both.

Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of scientific articles regarding unsafe listening practices published between 2000 and 2021 across three databases, the study said.

The unsafe practices were tracked according to use of headphones as well as attendance at entertainment venues, such as concerts, bars and clubs, according to the study.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention limits safe noise levels at around 85 decibels over 40 hours a week. If you are listening for only 2½ hours over a day, that is the equivalent of about 92 decibels, the study said.

Plugged into a smartphone downloaded with MP3 audio files, listeners often choose volumes as high as 105 decibels, and venues often range from 104 to 112 decibels, the study said.

Fortunately, policies, businesses and individuals can put measures into place to encourage safe listening and protect hearing from damage over time, Dillard said.

The analysis of the study was rigorous, and the evidence is compelling that hearing loss should be a public health priority, said De Wet Swanepoel, professor of audiology at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Swanepoel was not affiliated with the study.

“Music is a gift to be enjoyed for a lifetime,” said Swanepoel, who is also editor in chief of the International Journal of Audiology. “The message is to enjoy your music but safely.”

What to do with your device

Whether listening on your own device or at a concert, Dillard cautioned that ringing ears is a good sign that the music was too loud.

There are ways to prevent the damage before you notice the effects, however. Some devices allow people to monitor their listening levels in the device settings, she said. Some even will alert you when you’ve been listening too loud for too long.

“If your device says you are listening at unsafe levels, turn down the volume and listen to music for shorter periods of time,” Dillard said via email.

Experts cannot conclusively say which headphones are the safest for listening, Dillard said, but she did recommend using ones that reduce background noise, which may help keep the volume at lower levels since you don’t need to drown out the noise around you.

But you don’t always have control of the volume dial. If you are at a loud concert or venue, you can protect your hearing by standing further away from speakers and taking breaks away from the noise, if possible, Dillard said.

And it always helps to use some ear protection — even the foam ear plugs will do, she added.

“Hearing is the sense that connects us to the people we love,” Swanepoel said in an email. “Taking care of our hearing is key to maintaining healthy relationship(s) and general health and well-being. Primary prevention in early adults is critical to avoid earlier onset and accelerated age-related hearing loss.”
