Former Speaker found dead at home | World News

The former Speaker of the Dominica parliament, Alix Boyd Knights, was found dead at her home in Trafalgar, northeast of here on Tuesday.

Boyd Knights, an attorney, served as Speaker from 2000 to 2020.

Upon her election to a third term on February 4, 2010, she became the longest-serving Speaker in Dominica’s history.

Boyd Knights, a graduate of The University of the West Indies, was designated Speaker Emeritus in February 2020.

“It is so nice to be appreciated, and I am very grateful to the honourable prime minister and the members of the government side and all those persons who have met me and told me I will always be Madam Speaker,” she said then.

Boyd Knights served also as the chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarian and was the author of several papers and articles in the area of legislation and the formation of society, family laws and land laws, women’s rights, rights of children and domestic violence.

She is also the author of the publication Women in Parliament in Dominica, Past and Present.

A staple of the Denver music scene and beyond, Live For Live Music‘s The Funk Sessions series has been bringing rotating lineups of musicians together for all-star dance parties for several years. In addition to spreading to New Orleans during the last two editions of New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the series has cemented its place as a go-to Dick’s late-night since 2019 with an offshoot dubbed The Phunk Sessions.

The lineup for the fourth annual installment of The Phunk Sessions features Eric Krasno (guitar, vocals; Soulive, Krasno/Moore Project), Stanton Moore (drums; Galactic, Krasno/Moore Project), Eric “Benny” Bloom (trumpet; Lettuce), Wil Blades (keyboards; Eric Krasno & The Assembly), and Drew Sayers (saxophone; The Motet) along with other surprise guests.

The members of the lineup are all well-acquainted, with interconnected creative relationships dating back decades. Free beer and music festival in Albany features Everclear

There’s an inside joke among journalists — a lot of them; no, really, follow Overheard in the Newsroom if you’re still into the social media platform formerly known as Twitter — about press releases touting a “first annual” event.

It takes a lot of hope, chutzpah even, to declare something the first annual anything. It means you’re so sure your event is going to be successful, you’ll be willing to put in all that hard work and do it again next year.

So excuse us if we glance askew at your press release. Don’t mind if we edit that to “first-ever” and add, “what organizers hope becomes an annual event.”

Don’t get us wrong: We’re thrilled you’re trying out something new, and we’ll likely promote it in Mid-Valley Live. We’re happy to write about new events. But we’ll stop short of calling it the “first annual.”

So imagine our surprise when we got a news release for a second annual event, and we’d never even heard of the first annual.

And it features known recording artists.

Yeah, got a little sloppy cooking my breakfast this morning; could someone hand me a towel to wipe that egg off my face?

It’s called the Second Annual — deserved, here! — Albany Block Party. It’s a music and beer festival. We love music.

(In our defense, we did not receive anything about it last year. My email filing system is legendary, and after running a search, nothing came up.)

Last year, the story we missed was that Nate Smith, viral TikTokker-turned-signed country artist, would perform. This year, it’s ’90s alternative band Everclear. From Portland.

When you think of the 1990s, a lot of bands probably come to mind: grunge legends Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden for sure. But also post-punk Green Day, post-funk Red Hot Chili Peppers, minimalist White Stripes, and female pianist powerhouses, like Fiona Apple and Tori Amos.

But I’ve been cruising a lot of best-of lists, and Everclear is there too. Most include “Santa Monica,” a song that doesn’t include the seaside town’s name in the lyrics, so we’ll excuse you if it doesn’t immediately come to mind.

Here, let us help. These are the first two lines:

I am still living with your ghost,

Lonely and dreaming of the West Coast.

Now you remember, right? But Everclear is hardly a one-hit wonder. (That’s the domain of flashes-in-the-pan Semisonic with “Closing Time” and Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping.”)

Ironically, Everclear has a song titled “One Hit Wonder.”

Everclear had a solid five songs spend a total of 75 weeks on the singles charts, according to officialcharts.com (I have no idea how official this site is, but come on, official is in the name!). You know them, songs like “Wonderful” and “Everything to Everyone.”

Not exactly the lyricist stylings of say, someone like Fiona Apple (seriously, “You fondle my trigger, then you blame my gun” from 1999’s “Limp” is downright female anthemic, and no, we’re not talking actual guns), Everclear wrote some very raw songs expressing the hurt of a little boy from a broken family.

From 1997’s “Father of Mine.” And:

Promises mean everything when you’re little

I just don’t understand how

You can smile with all those tears in your eyes

Tell me everything is wonderful now

That’s a gut punch, and I come from a really loving, intact nuclear family. Someone had to sing for the betrayed 9-year-old, and it was Everclear singer-songwriter Art Alexakis, the only original member still with the band.

Alexakis has had his own struggles: divorce, not only his parents’ when he was 5 but also his own; a teen girlfriend who committed suicide and an attempt of his own; sobriety from cocaine and heroin (he has it now); and a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis seven years ago, according to many published reports.

That rawness in the lyrics has been earned.

Child found living in home with dozens of dead dogs in

EVESHAM TOWNSHIP, New Jersey (KYW) — A child was found living inside a home in Evesham Township, New Jersey, with dozens of dead dogs during an animal cruelty investigation, police said Tuesday.

Rebecca Halbach, 35, and Brandon Leconey, 32, are facing endangering the welfare of a child and animal cruelty charges.

Police said more than 30 dead dogs and nine injured canines were found Monday inside a home on the 600 block of Main Street. The injured dogs were taken to the Mt. Laurel Animal Hospital in “extremely poor health,” and one of them had to be euthanized.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s pretty bad,” said Evesham Police Chief Walt Miller.

Investigators said a 9-year-old child was also found inside the home and was removed because of unhealthy conditions. The child is now in the care of the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency.

The scene was something the officer with nearly 30 years of experience said he had never seen before.

“There’s dogs in cages, live dogs in cages, dead dogs in cages, dead animals throughout the house lying on the floor,” he said.

Miller says this started when a worker for a North Carolina animal rescue showed up, worried that a dog they sent to Halbach and Leconey was dead.

“And they were trying to pass off another dog as the dog that he was looking for,” Miller explained.

Miller said on Tuesday, police found about 70 more dogs in holes in the backyard covered with a tarp, possibly dead because of malnourishment. Police believe as many as 100 dogs may have died at the home.

Janice Thompson from Tender Mercies Pet Organization in North Carolina says it was her organization that notified police after they sent dogs to New Jersey in hopes of finding them forever homes. When asking for updates, she says she received a picture of a dog that wasn’t her dog.

“From experience, I learned always trust your gut,” she said.

Thompson says a volunteer went to check the home and get the dogs back, as soon as he saw the condition of one of the dogs, he called police immediately and the investigation began.

Miller said after all this, investigators still needed to hear from the public. He said more people or agencies may have trusted this couple with animals and money.

Thompson says she hopes other rescues can find their dogs they trusted the couple with.

“We are so grateful that a lot of other dogs were saved and they will never be able to do it again,” she said.
